Gay Theatre Hits the Road

They stun their audiences with their rapid changes: a substitution of a jacket and a few basic props and they're finished with a send-up of insipid talk shows and launching into a highly-charged scene where a gay father fights for his child visitation rights. Their presentation embraces every theatrical style, from stand-up comedy to dramatic monologue as they cast their attention on every aspect of gay life (and life in general), be it bars, bookstores, southern belles, fashion fads, UHF commerciais, Three Mile Island, love affairs, or consciousnessraising. At every performance, audiences have responded with

standing ovations and demands for more.

"They" are CULTURE SHOCK, which the Gay Theatre Alliance Newsletter noted as "of particular interest" at the Philadelphia Gay Cultural Festival, where the company premiered its first work in mid-May, "Amateur Nite at the Baths, or Doing the Audience." Culture Shock is Harry Long and Joseph Uher, who after 10 years of professional experimental and alternative theatre decided to combine their art and their politics to concentrate on exploring the gay experience theatrically. Since the Philadelphia Gay Cultural Festival, they have also appeared in Washington, D.C.,

Suit was brought in November, 1978 alleging that New Women's Times was "engaging in unfair trade practices against (New Women magazine) by intending to trade upon the good will established by New Woman". U.S. District Court Judge Mary Johnson Lowe found that the names New Women's Times and New Woman and the products themselves were so substantially different that a "reasonable" buyer would not be confused by the two.

"We know that the New Women's Times never engaged in unfair trade or ever thought of New Woman as having anything to do with our newspaper," said Karen A. The dinner menu featured barbequed chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad and cole slaw. Although an abundance of food was on-hand, the serving was slow. This apparently happened because the chicken was not precooked until serving hours due to a shortage of volunteers earlier in the morning. Therefore, valuable time, later in the day, was taken up with preparing the meat for barbequeing. Otherwise, the food was consumed hungrily. Beer and pop were served all day at no extra cost and those who wanted other beverages brought their own as liquor was not sold.

The future of the Greater Cleveland Gay Coalition looks favorable. Although this was the first event this group organized, it did turn out successfully. Plans are for a second Festival/picnic in 1980 and possibly one or two other events before then. The group expects to continue meeting in various Cleveland locations and is actively looking for new members. Part of the money raised through the Festival will be used to incorporate the group and maintain its current activities. Also, part of the money will be used to launch the Coalition's next event probably later this year or early 1980.
